Blue Bottle Coffee to open at Stanford Shopping Center this week

Uploaded: Aug 28, 2019
Come this Friday, Palo Alto will be home to not one but two Blue Bottle Coffee cafes.

The Oakland-born string of cafes is opening its newest location at Stanford Shopping Center on Aug. 30. It will join Blue Bottle's first-ever Peninsula cafe, which opened inside the historic Varsity Theatre in downtown Palo Alto in 2015.

The new cafe is located on the El Camino Real side of the shopping center, between clothing store Jeffrey and Labelle spa. Like other Blue Bottles, it will serve drip coffee and espresso drinks plus liège waffles, sandwiches and savory and sweet toasts for food.

The sleek, narrow space, designed by architectural firm Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, features a custom facade, skylights and folded vaults meant to evoke origami.

James Freeman started Blue Bottle more than a decade ago, before third-wave coffee was a thing, hand-roasting beans in a shed and delivering them to friends. The company now operates cafes in 10 cities in the United States, Japan and Korea.

The Stanford Shopping Center Blue Bottle will be open daily from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The cafe will hold a grand opening on Sept. 14; all sales that day will benefit San Francisco nonprofit Center for Urban Education about Sustainable Agriculture, or CUESA.

Just what we need another over-priced coffee shop. Much prefer Dunkin' Donuts to all the pretentious coffee emporiums we see at every turn around here. But I suppose Blue Bottle will be a big hit with the PA crowd. For the price Blue Bottle charges, would expect it to include a shot of Jameson.

Oh, c'mon now. I'm DELIGHTED to have another REALLY good coffee place move in. We're so lucky to have both Verve and Blue Bottle in our town. They surpass all the others. And anyone who loves good coffee knows that it takes a lot to make a great cup of coffee. We're not talkin' caramel macchiatos here. We're talking really wonderful coffee to linger over.

"third-wave coffee" -- new term to me. Had to look it up. Interesting evolution.

On the recurring comments over pricing, how does the cost break down?
Rent, labor, taxes, profit, interest on debt? Any guesses on the percentage of each?

Taxes would include property tax in the rent, payroll taxes on the labor,
income tax on the profit (if any), compounded by 9% sales tax on the entire sum.
I'm no accountant and don't really have a clue.

September 29 is National Coffee Day. Look for promotional deals on that Sunday.
