Vegan cafe to land in Mountain View this week

Uploaded: May 14, 2019
A vegan cafe will open inside Ava's Downtown Market & Deli in downtown Mountain View this Wednesday, May 15.

HeyOEats has taken over the space last occupied by Omelette House inside the 340 Castro St. market.

The owners of HeyOEats are focused on sustainability in the food and drink world, their first venture being a bottled bamboo leaf tea company called Igzu. The owner of Ava's Market, which sells the teas, approached Igzu co-founders Zachary Anderson and Courtney McCoy to see if they would want to open a storefront to replace Omelette House, Anderson said.

Anderson, a vegan and Kentucky native, developed the HeyOEats menu. The recent surge of companies that make plant-based alternatives to meat and dairy products, including the locally founded Impossible Foods, have transformed vegan cooking and eating, Anderson said.

The HeyOEats menu includes an Impossible burger, grilled "chicken" from Beyond Meat and vegan garlic-herb cheese and butter from Miyoko's. There's also vegan beer cheese with pretzels, a vegan Reuben sandwich, gluten-free skillet pastas and pad Thai made entirely from vegetables, among other dishes.

HeyOEats will be open for lunch and dinner initially, then add breakfast and weekend brunch down the line. Brunch dishes include cornmeal pancakes, chilaquiles and biscuits topped with a mushroom and Beyond Meat sausage gravy. The Southern-like dishes reflect Anderson's upbringing in and around a restaurant in Kentucky, he said.

At HeyOEats, customers can order at a counter and eat their food inside the market or take it to go. There will also be a prepared foods case stocked with salads, wraps and other grab-and-go items.

HeyOEats will at first be open from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily and later have the same hours as Ava's (8 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. daily, until 9 p.m. on Sundays).

Democracy.
What is it worth to you?

Great to see Ava's get a new restaurant in that space (though I still miss the deli counter). This vegan menu sounds fun. Hope it draws more people into our little neighborhood grocery store!

What great news! Ava's Market - you are making many people (and animals) happy and grateful for this smart decision to bring vegan food to Downtown Mountain View. Thank you!!

I am so glad to see more vegan options. One thing I wish that vegan restaurants would remember is that not all clients are there seeking meat substitutes. Sometimes they neglect the just plain vegan part of the menu! i.e., what's wrong with just vegetables? One of the reason I am a vegetarian is because I want more whole foods, I don't want a lot of processed stuff that looks like meat which I don't really enjoy that much to begin with.

In particular, Veggie Grill -- which, don't get me wrong, is a great restaurant -- has a lot of meat substitute items on the menu for which there is no vegetable-only alternative. (Also, not everyone can eat tofu, soy is a common allergen and it is also very estrogenic to those who are sensitive.) There is a salad place at Stanford, Tendergreens, that has almost negligible selection for vegetarians! You would think they would offer at least a few choices for vegetarians at a SALAD place, but it's usually the obligatory one choice that you could get anywhere.

I would just love to find restaurants for vegetarians where the VEGETABLES are the star, not the wannabe meats. I'm not against fake meats, I'm just tired of having to work around those same as meat at regular restaurants. I wish restaurants would remember to serve vegetarians who are there for the vegetables. In fact, it's getting to where a lot of regular restaurants have better veg options than veg restaurants. True Food Kitchen, although so $$$, always has excellent vegetarian options. Aqui has good vegetarian options. Gracie Jones Bakery will make anything they serve in a vegetarian version (that is equally yummy).

Really looking forward to seeing what Ava's has to offer! Just please don't forget us vegetarians!

If you are eating with a friend who is vegan but you are not, is it OK to bring in your meat sandwich to dine with them?

@Ham,
I eat with meat eaters but I know vegans who will not only not eat at establishments with meat, period, and would experience such an act as worse than an insult. If you are eating at a vegan restaurant with them, it's an acknowledgement of a choice they have made, which can be for reasons that go beyond health.

basic rule of thumb...if the host or person who invited you to dine is vegan, stay vegan. it won't kill you for one meal.

on the other hand, if the host or person who invited you to dine a carnivore, decline the invitation or don't complain & get on a vegan crusade soapbox.

simple as that.

I have eaten nothing but tofu, brown rice and raw carrots for the last 40 years (breakfast, lunch & dinner).

My primary care practitioner has assured me that I should live well past 100.

I don't know if I really want to. Those In&Out burgers look appealing at times but it would be akin to committing adultery on my digestive tract.

Vegans may be healthy but many are not fulfilled people.

I read somewhere that Adolph Hitler was a vegan as well.
