Rose International Market reopens in Mountain View

Uploaded: Feb 14, 2019
Rose International Market is back. The longtime Persian market reopened on Monday, Feb. 18, in Mountain View, an employee confirmed.

The market closed temporarily in 2015 while a four-story apartment complex was built at the corner of Castro Street and El Camino Real in Mountain View. After community backlash, the developer agreed to sign affordable long-term leases for several small businesses at the site, including Rose Market, so they could remain in the ground floor of the new building once it opened.

The renovated Rose International Market carries the same specialty grocery items, fresh produce and prepared foods that have made it a local favorite for decades. With "coming soon" notes posted on the windows in recent weeks, customers have been eagerly peering in for a glimpse of the renovated space.

Saied Mehranfar, a native of Iran, opened the original Rose International Market with his brothers on Castro Street 31 years ago. He eventually moved to the larger location at the corner of Castro and El Camino and later opened additional markets in Cupertino and Saratoga. He proudly claims to serve the "best kebab in the Bay Area."

The new Rose International Market is updated and larger but longtime customers will recognize many of the same Middle Eastern products, from imported Persian candies and pickled everything to massive tubs of tahini and blocks of fresh feta cheese. The market makes its own yogurt and jams. The market also now stocks Indian items like lentils and Italian pestos and dried pasta.

The kitchen, led by Rose Market's longtime Iranian chef, is again churning out kebabs, koubideh, khoresh (stews), tahdig (crispy-bottomed rice), wraps, salads and other dishes. Rose International Market will now serve chicken koubideh, a kebab made from ground chicken, onion and spices, which customers had often requested at the old store, according to staff.

You can order kebabs with lavash bread, on top of white basmati rice or as a "super sandwich," wrapped with vegetables, onion and tomato. All meats are halal.

The produce section includes both standard and specialty produce, such as Persian cucumbers, sour cherries (when in season) and green almonds.

The new development offers plenty of outdoor seating -- and, crucially, parking. There's a handful of one-hour parking spots behind the market, off Castro Street, as well as an underground garage.

Rose International Market's hours are Monday-Saturday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday. The grill opens at 11 a.m. and closes one hour before the store does.

Great news. We've been looking forward to the Rose reopening. Loved the freshly grilled kebabs a the old place and hope they're the same quality at the new one.

Welcome back, RIM!

We do most of our grocery shopping at Ava's downtown, but it's great to see Rose back up! Can't wait for another taste of their kababs this summer. :D

@Talking Cat:

Thanks for mentioning Ava's and reminding MV residents that there's this gem of an independently owned grocery store on Castro St., without which the downtown certainly would have a less-appealing look, feel and vibe to it. Family-owned stores like Ava's are vital, too, and need our support.

(I've heard the only rap on Ava's is the lack of parking, which isn't true because there's a large, multi-level, free public parking garage just behind it, where the CVS store is located -- enter on Bryant St.)

What is the parking situation at the store location?

Nice to see that Mountain View has a wide variety of grocery storesâ€" large, small and ethnic ones. Wish we had those choices in Palo Alto. Palo Alto cannot have large grocery stores because:
a) too much competition for the gone and unlamented JJ&F ( the old excuse
b) big chain stores are evil
C) there will be too much traffic

Looking forward to shopping at the rose market

Just curious- I mean a real Safeway/Whole Foods, like the ones in me menlo park, Los Altos and MV. The stores you mention in PA are all under 20k square feet ( an old unwritten rule made to protect JJ&F and prevent college terrace from having a hissy fit). Have you been to the PA Safeway- a tiny, dirty place that runs out of staples by6pm .
Notice how Safeway built large stores on both sides of Palo Alto - how better than to get Palo,Alto shoppers without having to deal with the Palo Alto process.

I'm so excited that Rose International Market will be coming back! They have amazing prepared foods! Koobideh, dill rice with fava beans, grilled veggies, etc. We love it all!

Ava's is a fantastic little market. The produce guy is a super-friendly and helpful. He's also very honest. Last summer, when I asked him about the mangoes, he cut one open to let me have a taste. And when I asked him about a bag of avocados that I wanted to buy, he told me the ones I was holding were from Peru and that avocados from Mexico were better. He was right. I also recently bought the freshest knob ginger from Ava's. Fresher than Ranch 99 and Whole Foods. And when their organic strawberries are in season, they are the best around. If you can't get to a farmer's market, go to Ava's.

It would have been helpful if the article had included even an approximate date for the re-opening...are we talking days, weeks or months from now???

@Poppadop, article's first line did say Rose Market "is set to reopen this month". Judging from the fully stocked interior photos, looks like reopening is tomorrow (if not yesterday already). Traffic is so ridiculous I never venture out of Palo Alto during business hours anymore, except occasionally to get my car serviced at A1 Foreign Auto a half mile up El Camino from the Castro intersection (all my favorite Palo Alto auto shops are gone). I'll have to wander up to this corner and check everything out during my next oil change. Or I'll probably visit (via VTA bus) during Mountain View's April 27 Spring Family Parade.
