Camper opens for lunch in Menlo Park

Uploaded: Dec 3, 2018
Menlo Park's buzzy new Camper restaurant is now open for lunch, with new sandwiches, soups, salads and entrees.

The restaurant opened at 898 Santa Cruz Ave. in September. The lunch expansion was driven by customer requests, according to an announcement.

"We have always wanted Camper to feel like an extension of people's homes," Managing Partner Logan Levant said. "Being open for lunch, we can be there to further support the community with delicious, thoughtful food in the middle of their busy days."

The lunch menu includes some dishes from dinner, including pastas and a cheeseburger. Dishes new to lunch include a grilled cheese sandwich, a house-smoked turkey sandwich on dutch crunch bread, a vegan squash "muffaletta" with whipped tofu and a black Angus flat iron steak served “Fred’s Style,” an homage to the popular marinated Fred’s Steak from Schaubs Meat Fish & Poultry at Stanford Shopping Center in Palo Alto.

Camper is also offering a prix-fixe "On the Run" menu that can be ordered to go for lunch. Customers can choose a starter and a main for $19 or a starter, main and dessert for $23 from that menu.

Camper is serving lunch Tuesday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Camper's kitchen is led by Chef Greg Kuzia-Carmel, who came with experience from the Michelin-starred Quince, Cotogna and Outerlands in San Francisco and Per Se in New York City.
Democracy.
What is it worth to you?

If they haven't fixed the deafening noise level there yet, the only way I'd eat there again is outside.

When we had dinner there with friends shortly after they opened, we chose to run errands rather than have a drink at the bar because it was so noisy. Once seated, We couldn't hear the other couple at our table, the waiter couldn't hear any of us and messed up several orders and the manager of the place explained that the management firm was aware of the noise problem but wouldn't spend the money to fix it.

Someone else please report back on whether they've redone the interior so people can hear each other.

Hello Readers,

This is Greg, from Camper. To respond to the comment above we have installed sound baffles around the restaurant and are employing as many techniques possible to help curtail the noise issues in the restaurant. Our cozy (and heated) patio as well as our carpeted back room (when not reserved for large parties) make great options for enjoying our restaurant. We work tirelessly every day to improve the experience here at Camper in every way imaginable. We hope you will give us a second look and if there is a desire for a more intimate setting we will happily try to accomodate that request.

We look forward to serving you again soon!

I realize you all are limited in what you can do with the staffing you can get, but I hope Camper considers adding weekend lunches. We'd eat there all the time on Saturday and Sunday. The other lunchtime weekend restaurants (Madame Colette's in particular) seem to do good business. Not sure what things will look like during the week, but the weekends would be a hit.

Hello Atherton Neighbor ????!

We absolutely want to add a Saturday Brunch. Staffing is certainly the lynchpin on finally adding that service but we know that it would be a major upswell for us. It's so beautiful down here during the day and we love just having a place for folks to convene and enjoy each other's company. Of all of the challenges of bringing this project to life there has been no greater reward than to meet you all and your families and your friends, and do our best to provide you a place that feels like yours and listens to you. We hope you will keep joining us and we will continue to find new and fun ways to satisfy as many of your needs as possible.

Cheers! Greg K-C

I have not yet visited this new restaurant. However, I am impressed by the responses, especially from Chef Greg. My husband and I live in Palo Alto and will plan a visit.

We've been to Camper 5 times now - keep going back to taste new menu items. Just tried lunch - terrific- a great addition to MP dining. And I noticed a definite improvement on noise with the new sound baffles. We'll be back!

Hi, where did the name “ Camper
Come from? Also the 19.00$ lunch cost seams like a lot of
Money for lunch. Has there been any discussion for
A low cost lunch menu? Like 8.00 to 10.00 dollars.
Thanks in advance for the response

Really? If such triviality is worth reporting and discussing. We're all doomed.

"Hi, where did the name “ Camper Come from?" [sic]

This was explained in a previous article. Rather than enabling slothfulness, I won't post the explanation here. Go click on the first hyperlink in this article and read the explanation for yourself.
