Founder Khalil Rafati opened the first Sun Life in 2011 in Malibu after discovering what he describes as the transformative benefits of healthful eating. A former homeless heroin and cocaine addict, he continued to feel unhealthy even after getting sober. A friend introduced him to juicing and superfoods, changing the course of his life.

The Sun Life menu includes customizable fruit and vegetable juices, smoothies and "superfood shakes" like the "Fountain of Youth" (strawberry, banana, açaí, goji berries, resveratrol, coconut butter and apple juice) and the "Alchemist" (kale, cucumber, spinach, mint, fennel, mango, ginger, lemon and aloe vera).
There's also the $28 "Billion Dollar Meal" made from a long list of presumably expensive superfood ingredients, from coconut meat and goat colostrum to buffered vitamin C crystals.
The Palo Alto location also has a substantial retail section, with bottled juices, salads, vitamins, health bars, body care, books and other items for purchase.
There are now nine Sun Life locations. Palo Alto is the company's first outside of Southern California.
The Palo Alto Sun Life will be open Monday-Saturday, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
