San Jose bakery expanding to Mountain View

C'est Si Bon, a San Jose bakery specializing in custom cakes and Persian pastries, is opening a second location in downtown Mountain View.

C'est Si Bon has taken over 282 Castro St., where rolled ice-cream shop Icicles previously planned to open.

Icicles owner Lit Leong said he recently took over 292 Castro St., where the owner of Srasa Kitchen, Brandon Poon, had also planned to open a rolled ice-cream shop called Pushcart Creamery after closing the Asian-fusion restaurant. Poon did not return several requests for comment.

Leong said since the space was already built out for an ice cream shop, it was an easy decision to take over the neighboring space.

C'est Si Bon is a family-owned business that started in San Jose 12 years ago, said owner Shay Zangeneh. Zangeneh, her two sisters, mother and father run the bakery.

C'est Si Bon makes incredibly detailed, fanciful cakes. Yelp shows photos of a Jurassic Park cake, a cake topped with black heels and one in the shape of a champagne bottle, among others.

The bakery also sells Persian pastries made from recipes that have been in the family for decades, Zangeneh said. They make sweets like bereshtook (a cookie made from garbanzo beans, pistachio, cardamom, sugar and ghee) and Persian-style baklava made with almond flour, cardamom, pistachio and rose water.

The San Jose bakery also sells items like cupcakes, mousse and eclairs.

The Mountain View location will be more grab-and-go, Zangeneh said, with some pastries, cakes, coffee and sandwiches for sale. People can also order and pick up custom cakes there. They're calling the new outpost "Treats on Castro Street."

Zangeneh hopes the family feel of the business will extend to the bakery itself, which she described as a "feel good environment where people can have a family experience."

She's eyeing a February opening.

A few years ago I wished we had another bakery on Castro. Since then we have seen five new ones open, or plan to open: Alexander's, La Panotique, Paris Baguette, Maison Alyzee, C'est Si Bon.

I wonder if they can all survive, and I hope they differentiate. There really isn't a place to get GREAT take-away baklava. Great baklava is made fresh daily, and doesn't really last past the day it was made because of the liquid (rosewater and honey as I understand). I hope C'est Si Bon or someone goes this route, along with more Mediterranean/Middle Eastern desserts. Hopefully Maison Alyzee will go the pure French route. We have enough of the Asian bakeries in this area already, and Paris Baguette will just be more of that.

Isn't there also a bakery planning to open where Drunken Lobster was? That is a lot of bakeries within two blocks. I hope some of them survive.

Alternately, I hope we get a tin pot ice cream shop!

Does this bakery bake its own bread?

I yearn for a good bakery that bakes proper bread, the kind of bread that is made from flour, water, salt and yeast. No honey, no corn syrup, no extra ingredients. Just proper bread that smells of yeast and tastes like real food and is warm from the oven.
