Biryaniz opens in Mountain View

An Indian restaurant specializing in biryani, a traditional rice dish served with meat, spices and other toppings, is now open in downtown Mountain View.

Biryaniz replaced another Indian restaurant, Shalimar Sizzle, at 246 Castro St.

It's connected to a local string of restaurants by the same name in Milpitas, Dublin and Rancho Cordova. Mountain View Sreeganesh Iyer said the Biryaniz owner is a "friend" and Iyer is operating locally as a "kind of franchisee."

The opening menu includes several biryani options, including with goat, lamb, chicken, paneer, shrimp and fish. There are variations from different regions, including Hyderabad, Vijayawada and Amaravathi. The biryani are served with raita, or yogurt, and salan (a Hyderabadi curry).

There are also vegetarian curries, chicken tikka masala and appetizers like samosas and a half chicken, marinated in yogurt and spices and then grilled in a clay oven.

Biryaniz is open Sunday to Thursday, 10:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 2 a.m.

New ownership again. I hope they don't add MSG like all other biryani places in the Bay Area!

Shalimar Sizzle was always closed. Curious as to why the last owner, Mo Polani, even bothered to renovate the place if it was going to never be open. Seems like a lot of the Castro St businesses do this, some renovate and then never open (Pushcart Creamery -> Icicles). Elena, it would be helpful if you actually provided this information/insight instead of just reporting that a place opened which is fairly obvious especially if it's on Castro Street.

E.g.
What's the deal with Park Balluchi becoming Mantra?
Why did Pushcart let Icicles take their spot after building it out?
What's going with the spot Icicles was planning on taking two doors down?

I appreciate Elena's blog posts. Not only do they announce openings and closings that are news to many of us, they also furnish details I don't see anywhere else.

(By the way, Change of Sylvan Park: Mo Polani is still part of Biryaniz. Shalimar Sizzle was open and did business for months, we ate there, but it had problems, and closed sometime back in preparation for an announced change of format -- aka Biryaniz. Park Balluchi only changed its name, a sort of facelift. Original Icicles address now says C'est Si Bon. And I'm curious too about the Pushcart-Icicles relation.)

Off topic, but Spot Pizza closed... rather abruptly. Does anyone know why? Elena? Thanks.

While we're asking about restaurants, I wonder if Elena knows why Kumino closed! I loved their ramen and am really going to miss them.

avigailvr-- according to their website they are temporarily closed and will reopen at a new site later

I ate their a couple of times and had a bad experience with the service. They treat single patrons like crap. Will not return.

Thank you for the reminder about their website. I have had many good experiences at Kumino and am looking forward to visiting them in their new location, whereever that ends up being!
