Rolled ice cream coming to Mountain View

Uploaded: Jun 26, 2017
The latest frozen sweets craze — Thai-style rolled ice cream — will soon touch down in Mountain View.

Icicles, which serves fresh rolled ice cream at several locations throughout the Bay Area, will open at 282 Castro St. later this year, owner Lit Leong confirmed Monday.

In case you're wondering what rolled ice cream is, it's made by pouring an ice cream base onto a flat, cold surface, mixing in desired add-ins, scraping and chopping it repeatedly and then rolling it into papyrus scroll-shaped servings. (Watch a video of the process happening at Icicles' Willow Glen location here.)

A shot of rolled ice cream posted on Icicles' Instagram page.

Icicles' ice cream is made in-house — they pasteurize the milk themselves — with fresh ingredients, Leong said. The ice cream is made to order and customizable for each customer.

Icicles' popularity exploded soon after Leong first opened in San Jose last summer, drawing large crowds and hour-long waits. He has since opened four more locations in Cupertino, San Mateo, Pleasanton and Newark. Leong also owns two New York Pizza outposts in San Jose.

Icicles serves flavors from oreo and strawberry to matcha and avocado made from a custard base. Customers can customize their own flavors with toppings. There are also pre-set combinations like "Nutella and Chill," a custard base with banana, graham crackers and Nutella blended in. Opt for unlimited toppings like fruit, boba, mochi, mini caramel cups and more and/or "drizzles" of different sauces like condensed milk, white chocolate and caramel.

Icicles also serves dairy-free flavors like raspberry, mango sorbet and strawberry-lemonade.

The Castro Street Icicles will have the same menu as the other locations, Leong said. He hopes to open in about four months.

The shop will be open from noon to 10 p.m., according to a business description filed with the City of Mountain View.

Watched the video. Seems like it was take FOREVER to serve a line of customers, since each "batch" takes 3-4 minutes. I don't understand how this business can scale.

Went to the San Jose store today. $7.50 for the only size. 8 minutes to place my order in line, 12 minutes later they started to make it. 4 minutes to make. 24 minutes total. Tasted like haagen Dazs.

In the end you waited too long and paid too much for ice cream that tastes ,well, like any other decent ice cream. Next up, laser cooked burgers: It takes 45 minutes of waiting in line to get it and it tastes exactly like any other good burger, but this one costs $35.00!!! Whoo-Hoo!

Life was boring before this.
