Palo Alto: Crawfish Fusion becomes Les Bizous

Downtown Palo Alto Cajun restaurant Crawfish Fusion has closed and reopened as a new concept: Les Bizous, a French eatery.

An employee confirmed the change-over Wednesday, explaining that the owner of Crawfish Fusion, Kristine Huang, temporarily turned the restaurant over to a family member who was interested in opening a French restaurant. Huang did not immediately return requests for comment. Two other Crawfish Fusion locations that pre-dated Palo Alto, in San Mateo and San Francisco, have also shuttered.

Crawfish Fusion opened in early 2016 at 423 University Ave., replacing Turkish restaurant Cafe Taxim.

With new signage in place, it has in the last few weeks fully transitioned to Les Bizous (though the employees appear to still be adjusting, with one at first answering the phone with a greeting of "Crawfish Fusion").

Les Bizous is serving mostly typical French fare — mussels, foie gras and more — but also dishes like saffron paella, lobster egg rolls and clam chowder, per an online menu.

Les Bizous is open daily for lunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and for dinner, 5-10 p.m.

Aw, too bad. I like Cajun - Creole food and there aren't that many choices in the South Bay. There is a place in San Carlos but on the pricier side.

My goodness. Is a restaurant the only thing people can come up with? What about a place to hear live music? What about a retail store that people would actually shop at? Place to take art classes? What about a spin studio? Pilates? For those of us that don't want to have to drive to a mini mall to get those things, it would be nice for University Ave to have more than just restos & robots.

A lot of cities around the size of Palo Alto don't want too many service businesses on their main downtown drag, but would prefer to keep them on side streets or on parallel streets a block away. In this case service businesses includes (but aren't restricted to): beauty salons, banks, real estate offices, fitness centers, auto body shops, etc.

The challenge for Palo Alto and many other local communities is current commercial real estate rates. High rents don't favor low revenue stores and bargain eateries.

Should downtown Palo Alto have a place for art classes? Sounds great. Does it have to have a University Avenue address? Absolutely not. Same with fitness studios (there are a bunch on the side streets as well some on Hamilton Avenue).

One thing is for sure: no one is going to please everyone all the time.

If you don't like downtown Palo Alto's retail mix, vote for people who think more like you. If you don't like the people whom your neighbors elected to represent the voters, then move to another town.

Move to Mountain View, Redwood City, Menlo Park, Los Altos, Cupertino, whatever.

No one is forced to live in Palo Alto or any other town.

There are plenty of spin and Pilates places within 2-3 block (in either direction) of University Ave. Vivre and Reach Pilates Studio to name two off the top of my head.
