New Thai restaurant replaces Palo Alto's Rice Thai Cuisine

Uploaded: Jul 19, 2016
The second outpost of a San Jose Thai restaurant has taken over 3924 El Camino Real in Palo Alto, the former home of Rice Thai Cuisine.

Siam Fine Thai Cuisine opened in mid-June, owner Heidi Tung confirmed Tuesday. The restaurant is not related to Siam Royal Authentic Cuisine in downtown Palo Alto, she said.

Tung did not know why Rice Thai closed, and owner Ricky Sudchaitham could not be reached, but a Barron Park neighbor wrote in a recent neighborhood-group email that Sudchaitham decided to take a break from the restaurant business and move back to his native Thailand. He opened the restaurant in 2008.

Tung, who studied engineering at Stanford University, said she wanted to open a restaurant in the city she called home for many years.

The Palo Alto menu is similar to the San Jose restaurant's, but with some new items like a Chilean sea bass green curry, Tung said. Photos of a menu posted on Yelp show traditional Thai dishes, from curries and noodles to seafood entrees.

"Everything is fresh," Tung said, from the tofu she buys on a daily basis from a tofu factory in San Jose to fresh rice noodles delivered from a noodle company in San Francisco’s Chinatown.

Siam Fine Thai Cuisine is open for lunch, Monday-Friday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and for dinner daily from 5-9 p.m.

Let's hope for an improvement, since Rice That was AWFUL. Sorry. Stumbled in here one day, lived to regret it.

We'll try Siam Fine Thai Cuisine soon since we live close by. I'll post our impressions then.

Disagree. I've been to Rice Thai several times, and have never been disappointed.

We loved Rice Thai. Ricky told us he was moving back to the small village he grew up in in Thailand, taking his elderly mother back there to live and take care of her.

Haven't tried the new place yet

Rice was so good. Ricky didn't use MSG, but he told me most Thai restaurants do. I would like to know if Siam does. It was the only Thai restaurant where the chicken choice in curries didn't deliver over cooked chicken. I've eaten at Siam in San Jose; it was pretty good. The parking for the new Siam is horrible! We made the effort for Rikki and his great food. If Siam is not wonderful, if won't make it because of the parking situation.

We loved the old Rice restaurant, with the Thai noodles and scented jasmine rice! I hope Siam is just as good. We'll know soon.
