Lutticken's owner opens Main & Elm in Redwood City

Uploaded: Jul 1, 2015
The owner of Lutticken's in Menlo Park has taken over a Redwood City coffee shop, transforming it into a full restaurant.

Bob Lutticken, who lives in Redwood City, recently took over Main Street Coffee and Roasting Company at 150 Elm St. and renamed it Main & Elm.

Main & Elm is now serving breakfast (omelets, scrambles, pancakes, bagels, breakfast burritos and the like), lunch (burgers, sandwiches, fish tacos, pasta, salads) and dinner (no menu available). There's also live music during Saturday brunch.

Lutticken remodeled a back patio to resemble a beer garden, with picnic tables, patio lounge chairs and bulb lights strung above. Wine and beer are served until 11 p.m. (Or check it out during happy hour, Monday-Thursday, 4-6 p.m.)

Several years ago, Lutticken also recently remodeled his decades-old Menlo Park deli on Alameda de las Pulgas and opened "Luttickens after 5," serving an expanded, upgraded menu and beer and wine after 5 p.m.

Per the Facebook page, Lutticken kept on the employees from Main Street Coffee as well as the coffee shop's hours.

"We want current customers to feel like very little has changed in their home away from home," Lutticken said.

Breakfast is served Monday-Friday, 7 a.m. to noon; Saturday, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Lunch is served Monday-Sunday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dinner is Monday-Sunday, 4 to 10:30 p.m.

Mr. Luttiken is a respected fixture in the community who is always generous with his time and philanthropy. We have used him for catering for years and years and are a regular at Luttikens after 5. Our son who is 32 used to get his grade school sandwiches from Luttikens. We can't wait to try the new restaurant. Love love love his food. (this is not a paid announcement :)

Stopped by here and was hugely impressed. The enclosed patio area is adjoined by a spiffed-up wine/craft beer bar and the menu has been updated as well. Great place for mid-afternoon hang-out or after-movie date.

Finally, it's easy to park - that's now a big deal in RWC !

(no, I don't have stock in the company ! )

Nice that another family owned business was able to take over the location. Good luck to the new establishment though I will miss the wonderful cookies, pies and cakes produced by Main Street Coffee. Hopefully Bob acquired the recipes.

Recipes are a dime a dozen; you can find recipes from world-class chefs/bakers online for free.

The key is to find someone who can execute them correctly and consistently. Since Luttickens retained the previous employees, one should expect the quality level to stay very similar to what was there before.

I should add that the other key factor is not to skimp on ingredient quality.

For most cooking, I'd say that the final result is about 75% ingredient quality, 20% technique and 5% equipment.

An experienced home bread baker can produce loaves that rival or exceed those of commercial bakeries. The only thing they can't do is scale up their efforts to churn out dozens, hundreds of loaves.

Remember, you can go to the library or a used bookstore and find old bread baking "bibles" that have been on the shelves for decades.

The recipe is not the issue.

We love Main and Elm! Right down the street from our house. Bob Luttiken has done a great job with this spot!

Just went there for lunch, and was very impressed - food, value, service, ambience, w/ adjacent easy off-street parking. In an old commercial/industrial neighborhood just east of El Camino Real. IMO, nothing like it in Palo Alto right now, which is not a surprise considering the relative property lease rates. Worth the drive!
