October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Uploaded: Oct 8, 2014
Have you seen all the NFL players and staff wearing hot pink? The campaign is called 'The Crucial Catch.' The pink garb will be auctioned to raise funds.

The NFL, along with the The American Cancer Society, and many other organizations are honoring October Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

I recently joined NAPW (National Association of Professional Women), and our Palo Alto chapter met last night. One of our topics was how we want to participate in Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

I said I'd write about it: women, do your breast checks monthly and get your mammograms regularly. Let your beloved check, too. Do it while you're fooling around, or in the shower together. If either of you notice anything different, get it checked out right away.

Prevention and early detection are the keys.

The American Cancer Society has a tremendous amount of information, and I'll highlight a couple here.

The American Cancer Society always needs donations of money, cars, and so on as they have to select what to research since they never have enough funds to research everything on their agenda. You may donate to them on their website in the name of someone you love who has or had breast cancer.

One of our local organizations that supports women with breast cancer or ovarian cancer is Bay Area Cancer Connections.

Feel free to share stories of hope and loss.

What is it worth to you?

Thanks Chandrama. It's really too bad that the new Paly football coach Halas is not allowing the guys to wear pink this season, as they have in the past. It would be nice if the community would turn him around on this. It's a great way for the young men to participate in this worthy cause, as they begin to make life choices as young adults, and it sends the wrong message by excluding them from this positive display of solidarity with women.

Hi Paly Parent,

I didn't know this, and as a Paly parent myself, I wonder what we can do about this? An email campaign to the coach and principal? What do others think about this and want to do?

I wish as much emphasis was given to other maladies. Heart disease kills 70 times more women than breast cancer. Lung cancer kills nearly twice as many women as breast cancer. Colon and pancreatic cancers kill women at high rates.

So when is prostate cancer month, why is that men's diseases don't get as much attention as women's. It seems sexism at the worst....

Hi eluy,
Thanks for pointing out these numbers, and the many diseases that are killers of women and men alike.
