Cooking Papa opens third location in Mountain View

A small South Bay restaurant group running Cantonese restaurants has opened its newest location in Mountain View.

Cooking Papa opened its doors Monday, May 19, restoring life to the former Sizzler space at 1962 El Camino Real. In 2012, the site was a point of contention in Mountain View, with residents lamenting the loss of Sizzler and the City Council eventually voting against allowing a Chick-Fil-A to take over the space and open with a drive-through.

The Cooking Papa menu is exhaustive, with dim sum, appetizers, soup, clay pot dishes, 13 kinds of fried rice, multiple versions of congee (rice porridge) and many traditional Cantonese entrees. You can wash all of that down with Hong Kong-style milk tea, boba or beer, among other drink options.

The Mountain View outpost joins two other Cooking Papa's, with the original in Santa Clara (opened in 2010) and a second in Foster City (opened in 2011).

Boo, City Council!!! They give builders a green light to build anything they want, but god forbid they let a right wing conservative fast food chain take up a spot on El Camino.

They don't care that the Chick-fil-a would provide jobs to local residents, instead of this small group of business owners who will 'keep it in the family', where there is no chance for someone off the street to win a job.

Nice going City Council.

The Mt. View City council has mad Mt. View one of the worst Cities for restaurants in the bay area. What a joke. Drive down castro. I go to Sunnyvale or Palo Alto to get Dinner. You can only eat a Chevy's and Chilies so much......

What? Cooking Papa's is delicious! It's nice to see an authentic Cantonese cafe around the Mt. View area. And, what's wrong with small businesses; those are the ones that add local flavor. Yay for real Chinese food!

That's great news. Lately, whenever we drive by we slow down to see if it has opened for business, yet. We really like the Cooking Papa in Santa Clara. We went there on Mother's Day. :-) ...although we mainly eat there when we're over that way for some other reason,-- it's a little bit too far for us to go just for dinner. Also, the SC restaurant is so busy that sometimes it's hard to find parking. I hope that isn't a problem in the new location. About 10(?) years ago we used to eat there when it was the Sizzler, but offhand I don't remember how much parking that site has.

Thank God (not that there is one, of course) that Mtn View City Council protected us from that pro-family restaurant chain. It has made way for a Chinese restaurant chain which is sorely needed in our area where Chinese restaurants are so scarce.

Good food, excellent services, at affordable prices. Parking is free. Real Cantonese / Chinese food for those who enjoy good food.
