Even the Palo Alto Library had an event called "Brew University." Never too early to prepare to become an alcoholic.
Yes, I know, they concentrated on process and taste. Right. Just wondering which bright light in that department approved it.

@Strange -
That's an odd take you have on this celebration of craft brews. The library is there to educate it's community, not to limit information to that approved by its more prudish members.
Kudos to the bright light who's behind Brew University, whether it's a staff member or someone from the community.

@Strange but True,

Seriously- most beer drinkers don\\\'t become alcoholics. Perhaps you also believe we should limit cookbooks in the library to prevent people from becoming obese?

Diane -- Shhhhh!

You risk giving ideas to the Mountain View City Council, already on a spree of banning things for our own good (as Jim Neal pointed out in a recent MV-Voice "Town Square" posting). And I actually use cookbooks from the city's library.

I have been surprised to see how many cookbooks the library buys, I use them myself but so, so many!
You cannot deny the connection between the incredible interest in food, and the scary increase in obesity. The word obsession comes to mind. Even this Town Square has 3 blogs about food.

Discussing food is not an American phenomenon. It is a worldwide practice that permeates pretty much every single culture in world history. As a matter of fact, many other cultures are even more "obsessive" about discussing food than the United States, yet show markedly less obesity.

The increase in heart disease and obesity has largely paralleled the consumption of refined sugar (particularly high fructose corn syrup) in a population's diet.

Note that obesity in America is more prevalent in lower income households. It is not DIY brewing or home cooking that is creating obesity. It is the modern abundance of inexpensive fast food (which are often loaded with hidden sugars) as well as sodas.

Basically, spending $50 at a nice restaurant will not make you fat. Going to a $5 fast food restaurant ten times will.

The Wet Your Whistles Caltrain Pub Crawl on Saturday now has a 3rd location. We'll be starting at Bierhaus in Mountain View, heading by train to the Rose & Crown Pub in Palo Alto, and finishing at Marvin Gardens in Belmont. Hope to see you there!
