Las Vegas Raiders receiver Davante Adams returns to his hometown of East Palo Alto to surprise his grandmother, Bettie, with a home makeover on “Secret Celebrity Renovation,” which airs on CBS at 8 p.m., Friday, Sept. 21. The series gives celebrities a chance to gift a surprise home renovation to a person who helped guide them to success.

In the trailer for the episode, the NFL star receiver, who began his string of prolific receiving years as a senior at Palo Alto High School, said his grandmother was like a second mom to him.

“We all grew up in that house in East Palo Alto,” Adams told host Nischelle Turner. “Just having her guidance, her cooking, her love, her discipline, all those different things kinda led to me being the man that I am today.”

The renovation, he said, is a unique opportunity for him to give back to his grandmother.

In the episode, Adams gets his hands dirty during the renovation painting walls, moving furniture and tearing down cabinets, according to a blog by Raiders digital team reporter Levi Edwards.

Apparently, according to Edwards’ blog, “Bettie was a Raiders fan long before Adams joined the team.” The den, where Adams slept as a youth, was covered in Raiders memorabilia, he writes.

This isn’t the first time Adams has returned to East Palo Alto to give back to his community. Adams regularly returns to his hometown during the offseason to hold fitness camps for kids. In 2021, he helped establish a permanent fitness program at the Lewis and Joan Platt East Palo Alto YMCA. In March, he donated outdoor fitness equipment at Jack Farrell Park for the community to use in partnership with sports nutrition company Optimum Nutrition’s Building Better Lives program.

If you miss the CBS airing, the episode can be streamed on Paramount+.
