The Mountain View community is rallying to support the Daniels family after Mountain View High School mom Lucinda Daniels suffered a stroke at a Friday, Aug. 25, varsity football game in which her son was injured.

Lucinda Daniels was watching Mountain View High's football team take on The King's Academy at their Sunnyvale campus when her son Dillon suffered a leg injury.

Lucinda and her husband Dale went onto the field to support their son. In the course of medical personnel tending to Dillon, Dale fainted and a second ambulance was called, according to The Mercury News.

Dale recovered, but Lucinda then collapsed and both she and Dillion were transported to the hospital, coach Paul Steffen told the Voice.

"I've coached high school football for quite some time and it was the most surreal experience," Steffen said.

The severity of the incident wasn't immediately clear, Steffen said, but it turned out that Lucinda had suffered a stroke at the time, followed by a second stroke on Saturday, according to a GoFundMe set up to support the family.

Head coach Tim Lugo told The Mercury News that Lucinda had an aneurysm that may have burst and caused her to suffer a stroke. She then had a second aneurysm on Saturday, according to The Mercury News. After the second incident, doctors determined that she had no brain activity.

Dillon sustained a dislocated foot and broken bone in his leg, according to the GoFundMe.

Lucinda was an organ donor and underwent surgery to transplant her organs on Wednesday, Aug. 30, Dale Daniels told the Voice, adding that his wife saved several lives.

In the wake of the tragedy, other parents on the football team set up a GoFundMe page to support the family that has raised over $110,000, as of Wednesday afternoon.

Lucinda and her family have deep roots in Mountain View and were heavily invested in the high school football program. Lucinda was herself a Mountain View High graduate, Steffen said, and has stayed involved in the community as her four children went through local schools.

Her eldest son played football at Mountain View High and graduated in 2021, Dillion is a senior and her third son is a freshman on the junior varsity team, Steffen said. Her youngest child is in elementary school.

Lucinda was a constant presence at football games, waving her pom-poms and cheering loudly from the stands, Steffen said. He added that it's her smile that he will miss most.

"She always had that infectious smile," Steffen said. "(She) was always all about the kids, always about the players. It wasn't just about rooting for her own children, it was about every player on the team – from the star of the team to the second string player, she was supportive of the entire program."

Ally Bocchieri, whose son is also a senior on the team, similarly described Lucinda as someone who was an instrumental part of the football program. When their sons got onto the varsity team during their sophomore year, Lucinda made signs for both boys to cheer them on during their first varsity game, Bocchieri said.

"She didn't have one kid on the football field, she had 50 kids on the football field," Bocchieri said. "She loved every one of those boys."

Dale Daniels told the Voice that he has appreciated the "overwhelming support my family received immediately from the entire community," including parents, coaches, administrators and others.

"It means so much to my family in this extremely difficult time," Daniels said.
