Man fatally shot in Mountain View, suspect arrested on suspicion of murder

A gun was recovered at the scene and there are no outstanding suspects, police said

A 29-year-old man was fatally shot in Mountain View on Sunday morning, Aug. 20, and police officers have arrested 23-year-old Juan Rodriguez on suspicion of murder, according to the Mountain View Police Department.

Emergency dispatchers received calls just after 9 a.m. reporting gunshots heard on the 2000 block of Reinert Road, which is located north of the Monta Loma neighborhood. When police officers arrived, they found a man lying in the driveway of an apartment complex with at least one gunshot wound, according to a police department press release. He was declared dead at the scene, the release said.

Police identified the man as a 29-year-old Mountain View resident, but have not released his name.

Officers found Rodriguez, also a Mountain View resident, at the complex and detained him for questioning, later arresting him on suspicion of murder, according to the release. There are no outstanding suspects and a gun was recovered at the scene, the release said.

The police department described the case, including the motive, as being under "active investigation."

Homicides are very rare in Mountain View, with 15 reported during the 20-year period from 2001-2020, according to data from the FBI. Of those, only two occurred in the decade between 2011 and 2020. There was also one homicide in 2021 and another in 2022.

Mountain View is becoming increasingly violent. I plan to leave soon and find a nicer community.
